Improve muscle activation using this trick

When doing exercises it is very easy to use all tools at your disposal.

One easy to use is wrist flexion, this allows a mm increase toward the end. This is losing strong reps

One way to decrease this is to use wrist wraps. Skeptical? We implore you to try, it will only cost you $$ and will save you plenty of heartache.

If you want more restriction – there is Harris wrist wraps which are thicker and restrict wrist movement to a minimum.

Testimonials

I started lifting with wrist wraps and the difference was noticeable. It made my form a whole lot easier!

I was skeptical about the difference wraps made, but when it costs only $10 and the payoffs could be huge. And it worked !

Make chinese learning easy

Problem

Learning mandarin is difficult. Americas Foreign Service Institute estimates 2200 hours of time is required to learning Chinese (Mandarin). At 4 hours a week, 200 hours a year, that is 11 years! A very long road indeed.

Solution/ Hook

For the equivalent of a coffee a day, you could get access to hundreds of videos and tutorials to contribute to the 2200 of learning. Listening while driving to work, on the train. This all contributes to the hours!

Irrational thoughts

Constant lack of confidence is irrational. It is always better to be confident than timid.

The worth of someone is tied to how much money they earn.

Life is always easy and there are no downs.

Everyone must like me.

I will succeed in everything I attempt.

/

A person with good characteristics is someone who i strive to be.

Life is full of up and downs. There are no high points without the low.

There will be people who like me, and those who do not.

I will try my best in all activities. There will be occasions where i will succeed, and others where i will not.

Commitment

Overhead at the coffee shop – A lady speaking with her lawyer friend. It sounded like they were discussing the finer details of divorce agreement. Who is responsible for what and who gets what. It sounded like an amicable separation.

So 50% of marriages end up in divorces – so the statistics gets often quoted. What I would like to bring to light is what the lady said at the end of the discussion. She mentioned that now she is ‘free’ after 7 years. I believe she was looking at the other person for approval.

So goes the cliche – that marriage is a prison for both the husband and wife. There are celebrations from both sides as losing the ball and chain. However, I believe this is the wrong attitude to have.

Marriage is a form of commitment to another person and two parties come together to agree on building a life together. There are sacrifices on both sides for the greater good. . Like losing weight, there is short term pain for long term gain. You commit to losing xxkgs over the course of your diet, make sacrifices/restrictions,  and adjust accordingly to achieve your goals.

If you fail in your commitment to lose weight – then it is not a cause for celebration. In fact, it should be a time for reflection and understand what could be done better next time. This applies to marriage – the failure of marriage is a disappointing event.

What went wrong? What do i need to change to make this a success next time? These are the questions to be asked. Saying the other person was terrible and now you are free does not improve the situation for next time.

Pleco Vs Anki

Flashcards and spaced repetition software (SRS) assist language learners to add new vocabulary. I have used two programs and provide a comparison for both.

Anki – Free or 14.95 for an upgrade

Anki provides a platform to add cards. This can be on any topic (languages, chemistry)

Pleco – $39.95 to purchase

Anki only provides mandarin language flashcards. They also provide sound pronounciation linked to it (Cantonese, male/female mandarin) which is especially helpful.

Pleco was useful to learn words. Anki was easier to add phrasing or sentences. I would prefer to use Pleco as the cost $39.95 is insignificant in comparison to costs of your time and tuition.

Why pay for Pleco?

For example the cost of a 10 week group 2hr group class. Would be approximately $300USD. And the opportunity cost for time spent, assuming a part-time job $15/hr is also $300USD. Therefore the time spent in class is equivalent to 600USD. $40 is only 6.7% of the total sum.

How to use Pleco?

One bag carry for backpacking

This post will detail my recent lessons learnt from my 2 week trip to Argentina and Brazil in September 2019 and Myanmar Vietnam in 2018.

First we should look at the requirements for multi-destination trips.

Considerations for multi-point trips

  1. Weight (under 1.7kg)
  2. Comfort (chest strap, waist strap)
  3. Convenience (large space, laptop easy access, drink bottle, smaller)
  4. Protection (Material thickness, waterproofing)
  5. Aesthetics (does it look good)
  6. Zippers (YKK)

Destination: Travel to Argentina and Brazil (Hot Weather)

Carry: 45L Carry-on roller  x  30L Timbuk2 Spire Laptop backpack

The idea for this combination was to put clothes etc into the roller and use the backpack for the expensive stuff. This was to be more free while travelling. Having a 46L backpack on your back is expecially restrictive, and since I was travelling to more ‘dangerous’ places I thought this would be better.

A cheap roller ($50 from Big W) and a new 30L Timbuk 2 backpack ($160)

Timbuk2 Spire Laptop Backpack

Pros

Roller definitely lessons your load while in transit so you are not walking around with 15kgs on your backside. Problem is the whether the footpath is flat and even, which South American footpaths are not. I ended up carrying the roller most of the time.

Roll top on the Timbuk2 really a great plus, allowed me to store my neck wrest and jacket where required without adding to the bulk of the bag.

Cons

The biggest problem with this combination is weight. My carry did not come under airline carry-on policies. The general rule here on South American carriers is (GOL,AA, LATAM, Norweigen) is 10kg.

Suffice to say, my bags did not come under the travel limits. I packed my bags close to their volume and my total weight was approximately 8kg (roll on) + 7kg (backpack). This included a SurfacePro laptop. The problem with this is that the rolling suitcase minimum weights are going to be 2.7kg

  • Ospray Fairpoint 40L = 1.4kg
  • Timbuk2 Wander Backpack duffle = 1.7kg
  • Timbuk2 copilot luggage roller 42L = 3.4kg
  • Wandred HEXAD 40L = 1.8kg

Luckily for me, they did not weigh any of my bags and it seemed that there was fairly loose checking on the stewardess part. Just make sure you arrive at the gate early to get the space in the overhead compartment. I presume this is because the flights are not ‘budget’ airlines and were partial service (drinks were provided).

Air New Zealand (and generally Australian) carriers have a limit of 7kg for carry on. I have found that they do not generally weigh backpack looking bags but will weigh suitcases.

How about getting around? Most of the my travel from destination was with Taxi/Ubers so there was not alot of walking around point to point, like say you would in Japan. The footpaths in Brazil were not flat and it was difficult to roll at times. Argentina was a bit better but I encountered the same problems

Developing country = Back pack, Developed country = consider roller

Matching carry to the weather. The Spire2 Backpack selected was a bit too ‘heavy’ for the tropical destination and since it was black did not match the aesthetics. Much more suited for cold weather climates eg. Argentina

Destination: Travel to Myanmar + Vietnam (Hot Weather)

Carry: Osprey Porter 46L backpack  x packable north face side bag

Osprey Porter 46 Unisex Pack

Pros

One bag travel. Comfortable with chest strap.

Cons

Ospray Porter a bit too large and therefore looked too large on my frame. I am 6ft3 89kg. My friend was travelling with the 40L Ospray fairlight and that looked alot more suitable.

Northface packable side bag for those day trip. Easily fit a water bottle and any extras. I had decided with using this over a packable backpack in hot water countries due to sweat gathering on the back.

Ospray porter lacks a laptop compartment and drink bottle. Drink bottle is great to have as it reduces the space required inside the bag for a bottle.

EZE Airport

Airport in good condition, i would say the terminal is fairly new with expansion underway. There was decent enough food options airside and lots of space.

3 options for travelling to the city

Uber

  • Uber pickup is outside the terminal in Parking lot B. This is okay because there is wifi outside the terminal. This is near the Tien Lianda bus. Cost was 700 ARS to the city. a taxi from the city costs 700-900 ARS. Note the driver needs to pay tolls each way that seem to be in the vicinity of 100ARS (50+50) each way.
  • Upon review of the Uber app seems there is a pool of cars waiting for airport pickups so you wouldn’t have to take too long. I waited for 5 minutes only

Transfer

  • Takes 45 minutes to the city and then you have to wait for a transfer from the office. Takes 1.15hrs. I took this option first and it seemed too take a long time. The price was the same as taking an Uber ~700ARS. Note that the first bus to the city is at 5am, so if you are arriving earlier you will need to wait.

Booked Taxi

  • Shopping around helps with pricing quoted 30USD and 25 USD

Public Transportation

  • Number 8 Bus. The travel to my Hotel was clocked in at 4hrs through google map directions. I did not attempt this route

Withdrawing money

  • There is an HSBC atm in the terminal. However atm fees are steep, costing roughly 10USD

Areas available to sleep

  • Top of Terminal A there is an area where people seem to sleep

International Transfer

  • Upon arrivals, it looks like you will need to go upstairs to go through the transfer. This requires you to pass through security check but not requiring you to pass through immigration. Seemed generally efficient and this could be done in 30mins
